Comparing Nas and Amy Winehouse's albums

The Nas’s Illmatic album cover is a perfect example of 90s hiphop. The album covers cover shows a boy facing the camera, it is a closeup up so therefore his whole head fits the album cover. The opacity of the boy appears to be about fifty percent, blending the image with the background of the streets, and estate buildings. The boy appears to be an image of the artist when they were younger, and the streets suggest that the artist will be talking about the effects of the streets on there life. The font used is quite harsh, as it is a gothic font, which was very common for 90’s rap album covers. Overall the album cover illustrates that the album will be about the reality of the artist growing up on the streets. This shows that while the album cover conforms to hiphop stereotypes, the artist is seen as organic as the album cover doesn’t sell the idea of the artist being constructed by a record label.

The Amy Winehouse album “Frank”, is another example of an organic artist, however in a completely different genre of music. The album cover shows Amy (the artist) walking her dog in the streets. She is looking slightly off camera and her overall clothing makes her look somewhat natural and she is not wearing a dress or other attire that doesn't fit the location of the picture. The picture captures Amy walking what I presume to be her dog, this makes her appear somewhat normal and humbles her to her audience. Therefore suggesting that she is an organic artist as she is not overly made up and she is not trying to be something she is not. She appear very natural, as if she has just been captured by a friend walking her dog home. The name of the album matches the colour of her top which is pink, which could emphasise the idea of feminity and female empowerment.

Overall the two album show completely two different things, even though both the artists being organic. The album emphasises the idea of feminity however as well displays her in a natural light, as well showing her to be from the streets, which suggests the album topic as the same as Nas’s album. While Nas’s album colours and overall feel shows a rougher feel therefore a more masculine feel. Nas’s album cover appears to show that the topic of his childhood would be prevelent, while Amy’s appears that she will be talking about more present pressing issues in life at that moment.
